Summer Course at San Francisco Art Institute
Sculpture 213-1 Living Architecture/Habitats

Monday- Friday 9-1:30

In this course students will work on creating a sculptural green roof at the San Francisco Art institute. Green Roofs have a long history that spans many cultures, continents and climates. Green Roofs also referred to as “living roofs” can serve many functions within the urban fabric of the built environment, such as reducing storm water flows, energy use and heat island effect. They also provide much needed habitat and offer critical wildlife support within our cities worldwide.

Students will work with environmental consultant, Lisa Lee Benjamin of Evo Catalyst, as well as other local resources such as the Green Roof Alliance, Urban Hedgerow, The City’s Green Connections Program and Flora Grubb Gardens, to investigate the benefits of a living structure within the architectural built environment. Students will work with issues ranging from substrate selection and patterning, plant selection and wildlife species identification, beneficial insect habitats and environmental design. Students will also discuss and investigate how environmental design and sculpture interface as a way to add dynamic possibilities to practical issues. This course is part of the Environments and Systems emphasis in the Sculpture/Ceramics Department.
